Building Your Brand: How Student-Athletes Can Grow With Purpose, Confidence, and Strategy

Every college athlete arrives with a story: how you grew up, who believed in you, what you overcame, and what you’re chasing. But in today’s world, your story doesn’t just live on the field or in the locker room. It lives online. It shapes how fans see you, how coaches relate to you, how brands evaluate you, and how future opportunities find you. Social media isn’t about being an influencer. It’s about owning your identity, controlling your narrative, and building something that lasts long after your last snap, rep, or game. This is your guide to doing that with intention.

Why Your Social Media Presence Matters
Your online presence is now part of your athletic career. Coaches look at it. Brands look at it. Fans look at it. Future employers look at it. When you treat your platforms like an extension of your work ethic, you win.

The Do’s: How to Grow Your Social Media the Right Way
Show your personality. People follow people, not highlight reels. Share moments that feel real: your routines, your teammates, your humor, your passions.
Be consistent. You don’t need to post every day, but you do need to show up regularly.
Use high-quality content. At most universities, you will have access to elite creative support from photoshoots, graphics, video content, and more. Use it.
Engage with your community. Reply to fans. Celebrate teammates. Support other athletes.
Tell your story. Your journey is your advantage. Lean into what makes you different.

The Don’ts: What Hurts Your Brand
Don’t post emotionally. If you’re angry or frustrated, wait.
Don’t chase trends that don’t fit you. Authenticity beats virality every time.
Don’t overshare. Protect your privacy, your teammates, and your program.
Don’t argue online. You will never win a comment-section fight.
Don’t ignore your audience. If people are showing up for you, show up for them.
How to Build a Strong Personal Brand
A brand is the feeling people get when they think of you. Start by defining what you want to be known for. Pick three pillars:
work ethic
leadership
humor
faith
fashion
community involvement
academic excellence
position-specific expertise.

Build around them. Create content that reflects those pillars. Choose NIL opportunities that align with who you are. Think long-term. Your brand should grow with you from freshman year to senior year and beyond.

How I Can Help You Succeed
One of the most exciting parts of this role is the chance to work directly with the athletes: guiding, educating, and building their digital presence with intention. You’ll have access to personalized content plans, photoshoots, graphics, video storytelling, workshops on social media growth and NIL strategy, support navigating brand partnerships, and recruiting-focused content that elevates your profile. You’re not doing this alone. You’ll have a creative team behind you that wants to see you win.

A huge part of my role is getting to know our athletes beyond the roster bio. I spend time digging into their backgrounds, interviewing them, and asking the kinds of questions that open the door to what makes them truly special. Sometimes it’s a story a younger athlete can draw strength from. Sometimes it’s a unique talent or personality trait that fans instantly connect with. Sometimes it’s a hardship they fought through that deserves to be seen and honored. My job is to help athletes articulate those pieces of themselves in a way that feels authentic, relatable, and empowering so their on‑field performance and off‑field identity work together to build a brand that reflects who they really are.
What I Want Every Athlete to Know
Your voice matters. Your story matters. Your brand matters. And you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be intentional and authentic. Social media is a tool. Use it to build relationships, open doors, and create opportunities that last long after your playing days. You’re not just representing your university, you’re building the foundation for your future.
