Calling Audibles in Real Time: Content Strategy Under Pressure

For content creators in college athletics, especially at places like Missouri State, relevance is a moving target. The platforms evolve, the audience expectations shift, and the budget rarely grows. In today’s world of ever-shifting technology, climate, and cultural trends, staying relevant isn’t optional, it’s survival. And that’s exactly where strategy becomes your superpower.

Constraints Are the Canvas

As the lead content creator for Missouri State football, the challenges are real with limited money, a staff of not always reliable volunteers, and decision-makers who may not fully grasp the nuances of social media. When you know what you’re working with, you can build smarter, not louder so constraints don’t kill creativity.

Content Rollouts Are Living Things

A rollout isn’t a one and done. It’s a living, breathing process that requires constant tweaking. From capturing the right content to posting it at the right time, every step matters. You have to relate to your audience, build hype for fans and alumni, and be ready to turn a small, unexpected moment into something big. That’s where the magic happens, not in the perfect plan, but in the perfect pivot.

Analytics Are Your Playbook

Studying analytics isn’t optional! It’s how you learn when, how, and what to post. It’s how you know whether your hype video hit or missed. It’s how you decide whether to double down or switch gears. Without data, you’re just guessing. With it, you’re coaching your content like it’s game day.

The Season Starts in the Off-Season

The best content plans start months before kickoff. That means building a content calendar, choosing platforms, planning collaborations, and locking in a consistent brand voice. When the season hits, you want to be executing, not scrambling. Pre-season planning is what gives you the freedom to be reactive when the moment calls for it.

Quality Over Quantity, Always

When budgets are tight, the focus should be on quality. One powerful hype video can do more than a dozen filler posts. It’s not about flooding the feed, it’s about making every post count. That’s how you build trust, engagement, and momentum.

Build Your Bench: Student Creators

One of the most overlooked resources? Student content creators! Bring them in early for smaller jobs and under-covered sports. Let them grow into bigger responsibilities. It’s not just about getting help, it’s about building a pipeline of talent that understands your brand and your audience. At Missouri State, I found a graphic designer who specializes in sports branding and hype fresh out of graduating from a D1 university and he needed work. Then, we got 4 students with cameras and some experience who were willing to take on roles for videography and photography for our football games. Together, we were able execute a plan for the season, week, and game by posting on brand content on schedule or within minutes during the games.

Community & University Collabs: The Secret Sauce

Partnerships with local businesses and community leaders can be game-changers. Sponsor a “Play of the Week,” an academic spotlight, or an athlete feature. These collabs don’t just offset costs, they deepen your connection to the community and expand your reach. Collabs with student influencers, campus organizations, marketing, graphic design, or digital film classes can build on campus connections and resources.

In a world that moves fast and changes constantly, your content strategy has to be more than reactive,it has to be intentional. That means daily reflection, analyzing what’s working, and defining clear goals so every dollar and every minute is spent wisely. It means building a team that values growth, collaboration, and the thrill of creating something bigger than themselves. Relevance isn’t just about keeping up, it’s about leading with purpose, clarity, and heart.
